Japanese maple trees are highly popular additions to any landscape. And for good reason. They come in many varieties, so you can easily find one that is right for your climate. They have beautiful foliage in a range of spectacular colors. And once adequately established in the right spot, they are easy to care for year round.
Fall Preparation
If you are just getting started with your Japanese maple tree, fall is the best time to plant. In areas that experience freezing temperatures, try to plant about a month before the ground freezes. Doing this will allow your new tree to establish its roots before going dormant for the winter.

Unless you are in a particularly dry area, slow down your watering at this time to encourage even more vibrant hues. Be sure to apply mulch at the tree’s base during the fall season. This is also the proper time to pick off any dead leaves that are clinging to branches.
Winter Sleep
The only real concern at this time of year is heavy snow. Gently brush off as much as possible to reduce the weight and avoid breakage. If ice has coated the branches, do not try to remove it. This will likely result in broken limbs.
Spring Growth
Spring can prove to be a Japanese maple’s most challenging season. It will eagerly leaf out as it emerges from winter’s slumber but then is very vulnerable if a late spring frost hits. If temperatures are expected to drop, cover your maple to keep it protected. Once established, Japanese maple trees typically do not require much fertilizing. If yours is in need, take care of that job after the last spring frost.
Summer Splendor
Excessive is very damaging to the maple’s leaves, causing them to scorch and drop. If this is an occasional problem, your tree will generally bounce back. If it is a continual issue, however, you may want to consult with a tree specialist to see if your maple should be moved to a more protected location.
