Near Fort Lauderdale on Flamingo Road, Flamingo Gardens in Davie, Florida welcomes you! It’s over 60 acres preserved out more than 2000 acres of former fruit and citrus groves.
Background of Flamingo Gardens
There is an old-school Florida feel to this laid-back attraction, particularly in the Wray’s weekend house that has been remodeled to look like it did in the early days.
In addition to the plants available from ancient cycads that dinosaurs may have eaten to a massive live oak covered with bromeliads and resurrection ferns, Flamingo Gardens is a habitat for injured animals and birds that can’t go back into the wilderness. In the sanctuary, you’ll find otters, hawks, Florida panthers, flamingos, alligators, bobcats, and peacocks.
Animals
There is an aviary for injured birds. It’s around 25,000 square feet made up of different constructed spaces for wading birds. Walk through a set of doors, and you’re going inside the cage with the birds that are either flying around or nesting.
There is a list of dos and don’ts posted, and one excellent suggestion is, “Don’t look up with your mouth open.” This is great a chance to take pictures of pelicans, ducks, storks, roseate egrets, spoonbills, cormorants, ibis, herons, and more. Over 40 species are here as well as over 200 birds present on any given day.
Birds and Fowls
At the aviary, there are cages with vultures, owls, hawks, and falcons. There is a daily wildlife encounter show in which a naturalist brings out a host of reptiles and birds.
Peacocks and an assortment of other birds wander the grounds. A polite young lady is on the premises to sell ice cream and fruit smoothies. Also, the snack bar has the usual fare of chili, soft drinks, sandwiches, and hot dogs. You can have a snack and watch the beautifully colored birds.
Around the World Trees
There are coffee, mangoes, tall, bananas, tamarind, bamboo trees from around the globe. At one point, Flamingo Gardens got foreign seeds and plants for test plants. Several of these are still around and they are well-kept and nurtured by professional tree contractors. As a result, Tampa Tree Care highly recommends you visit!
If you’re ever in the area, stop by for a fun day!
