The beautiful maple trees that give you such lovely foliage and amazing fall colors are susceptible to a surprising number of diseases and pest problems. Many of the issues are merely cosmetic, but several can be fatal to the tree if left untreated. Let’s take a look at five common diseases in maple trees.
Anthracnose:
Caused by a fungus, anthracnose is primarily a cosmetic problem for your maple tree. It can lead to cankers, brown spots on the leaves, and leaves dying early. It frequently attacks young maples. Prune affected limbs and rake up fallen leaves promptly to help stop it from spreading.
Sooty mold:
Insects such as aphids bring this problem to your maple because the mold feeds on the honeydew that the insects secrete. As the name suggests, this disease causes a black, sooty powder to form on the leaves. It is easily rubbed off and does not do permanent damage to your maple. Addressing the insects with something like neem oil will help to prevent the mold.
Sapstreak:
Tar black spot.Attacking from the inside out, this fungus is very dangerous to maple trees. Once it has taken hold, it is difficult to save the tree, although some maples do go into remission after being infected. The fungus attacks the tree by way of its roots, usually through a wound from something like a lawnmower, so protecting the roots is the best way to protect your maple from sapstreak.
Verticillium Wilt:
This problem is not merely cosmetic; it is one of the most severe diseases in maple trees. The fungus responsible for the wilt is in the soil, and the tree’s roots absorb it, causing leaves to yellow, wilt, and drop early. It can attack quickly. If you see signs of wilt, call Tampa Tree right away, and we will do our best to help you save your tree.
Scorch:
As the name suggests, this maple tree problem occurs when the weather conditions are too hot and dry. Leaves may become dry and brittle, and sometimes the veins look brown as well. Keeping your maple watered during dry, hot weather will help avoid and remedy this situation, as will placing mulch around the base of the tree.
