Any tree care specialist will tell you that mulching is one of the best things you can do for your trees. Placing mulch around the base of a tree helps with water retention and weed control, allowing your tree to thrive for many years.
Homeowners are familiar with the variety of organic materials available, from pine needles to wood chips. But there are also several inorganic options as well, and one that has seen a rise in popularity is rubber mulch. Widely available online and in home improvement stores, rubber mulch is touted as a wonderful alternative to organic materials. But is it? Let’s take a look.
First, What Is Rubber Mulch?
Rubber mulch is simply recycled, shredded tires. In an attempt to alleviate waste, someone got the idea to shred them and sell them as a safe ground cover for playgrounds. Eventually, the same material came on the market as landscape mulch.
So, Is It Any Good?
Here are some ideas to keep in mind when considering rubber mulch for your landscaping needs:
- Maintenance: Organic materials typically have to be replenished every couple of years as they break down and become part of the soil. This decomposition helps maintain the soil’s health. Some manufacturers of rubber mulch claim that it does not decompose and remains looking fresh for up to 10 years. Research has shown, however, that it does break down, just very slowly. And as it does, harmful chemicals leak into the soil.
- Weed control: Both organic and inorganic mulches are great at controlling new weed growth. Most comparisons show little difference in effectiveness between the two types of material.
- Aesthetics: Many gardeners adamantly prefer the natural look and aroma of bark or wood chips. Rubber mulch comes in many colors, so if you’re looking for purple or teal ground cover, you’re all set! And while not precisely under the heading of aesthetics, rubber mulch is, well, rubber. So keep in mind that as the temperature soars, your garden may smell like a tire store.
